About Lear Books

Lear Books was founded by Anna Franklin in 2005. Anna is an author with many credits to her name, including the best selling Sacred Circle Tarot (Llewellyn), The Fairy Ring Oracle (Llewellyn), The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Fairies (Vega Chrysalis), Herb Craft (Capall Bann), Familiars (Capall Bann), Working with Fairies (New Page Books) and more than twenty other titles:

"Lear Books was born out of my frustration with mainstream publishers. I grew tired of having to dumb down my books when publishers would say 'that's too difficult for the reader, take that out and put some spells in' or 'angels/crystals/fairies are popular, can you write a book about angels/crystals/fairies?'. I also grew tired of having to threaten some publishers with legal action to get my royalties paid."

Mainstream publishers target their books at the lowest common denominator and jump on the bandwagon of whatever is currently fashionable so that the market is suddenly flooded with fifty virtually identical books on a subject. However, the world of publishing is changing fast and the big boys are struggling. More and more small press publishers are springing up bringing specialist books to the market, supplying a smaller but more discriminating audience. This is made possible by modern printing techniques which mean that  the shorter print this requires runs can be supplemented by print on demand re-orders to keep our customers supplied.

We aim to publish Pagan books by people who are experienced, practising Pagans, not jobbing writers. We want authors to write the books that they want to write on the subjects they know about.
